The History of the
Canadian South Devon Breed
South Devon originates from the County of Devon in southwest Britain and is unrelated to Red Devon cattle. South Devon has been a distinct breed since the 16th century and was first imported to Canada in the early 70's. South Devon cattle can be found working around the world. South Devon cattle in Britain were bred to be large-framed, once known as the "Gentle Giants", as they were the largest of the British breeds at that time. Since coming to Canada, they have been bred into a more moderate package, expanded from horned to polled genetics, and now include black.
Cows average 1400 - 1600 lbs. ~ Bulls average 2200 - 2400 lbs.
